AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING DEATH OF JAIL INMATE

01/08/2024

The Baxter County Sheriff's Office and the Arkansas State Police are jointly investigating the death of a Baxter County Jail Inmate who passed away at Baxter Health ER on January 6th after being transported there by ambulance from the Detention Center.

While performing routine hourly cell checks at approximately 6:30 AM on the morning of January 6th, Jailers noticed that Jail Inmate LARRY CHARLES BABIN, JR., 51 years old of Cotter, Arkansas, had not moved or changed positions in some time and went into the cell to check on him.  They found that the inmate was alive and breathing, but he would not respond to stimuli.  An ambulance from Baxter Health was summoned to the Detention Center.  Inmate LARRY BABIN was transported to Baxter Health ER where he passed away later that morning.

As is customary in these situations, the Sheriff's Office asked the Arkansas State Police to assist in the investigation into this death.  Two ASP Investigators were assigned to the case.  The body of the decedent has been sent to the Arkansas State Medical Examiner's Office in Little Rock for autopsy to determine cause and manner of death.

LARRY BABIN had been booked into the Detention Center on December 30, 2023 after being arrested by the Arkansas State Police on traffic charges, including DWI, and on a misdemeanor contempt warrant from the Baxter County District Court.  He had been scheduled to re-appear in District Court on January 11th.

Additional information cannot be released at present due to the ongoing nature of this investigation.
